Národní a Regionální výstava poštovních známek JIHLAVA 2009
Ve dnech 13, - 18. října 2009 proběhla v Jihlavě Národní i Regionální výstava poštovních známek s názvem JIHLAVA 2009 v Oblastní galerii Vysočina na Masarykově náměstí.
Zahájení bylo 13.října, slavnostní vyhlášení výsledků, tedy Palmáre v sobotu 17. října v budově radnice.
Součástí této výstavy byly i autogramiády tvůrců poštovních známek Martina Srba, Fero Horniaka a Martina Činovského. Návštěvníci výstavy mohli též získat podpisy i známých hokejistů bratrů Holíkových, kteří se zúčastnili legendárního hokejového Mistrovství světa v roce 1969.

Adrian Keppel gets all tongue tied about a mysterious stamp, before a fellow collector helps him get over the language barrier

 
Oh dear. I think this time I've bitten off more than I can chew! I'm usually all right when it comes to other languages. Seeing that hardly anybody speaks my native Dutch, our education was very much geared towards learning languages. So I'm all right with Dutch and English, I understand a fair bit of German and when I concentrate hard enough, even French texts don't pose too many problems.

I've even tried a few Italian handbooks and catalogues, and when I read those out loud (of course, having first closed the windows so as not to traumatize the sheep). I usually understand vaguely what they're on about. That is probably why I never thought twice when ordering the Pofis catalogue for my collection of Czechoslovakian Hradcany stamps. The SG catalogue is hopeless because it does not bother to distinguish properly between the various perforations, the Michel catalogue is OK as far as that is concerned but I wanted more background information and more information on many other items, such as proof material, tete-béche pairs, design types, plate flaws, printers' waste, and so on. Most literature on the set usually refers to the Pofis catalogue, so I had only one thought in my mind.

But when I opened the book I got the fright of my life. It's written in Czech! I know, I know, it does make sense, but I never expected that! Maybe that was because even when I bought my Greek catalogues, they were completely bilingual (Greek and English). So there I was, with this treasure of information in front of me, and no way of getting access to it! It's one thing to mumble a bit of Italian and understand every fifth word, but it is quite another when faced with phrases like “Vyskytuje se velké mnozství návrhu a zkusmých tisku v ruzných barvách”. And that's just the simplified version without all the accents! And every now and then there's this man staring at me from the pages, threatening to “nejvetsí nebezpecí ztraty hrozí sberatelum pri náktipu padelku vzacnyýh známek!”


I never thought twice about ordering the Pofis catalogue. But when I opened the book I got the fright of my life!

It's just as well that there are many free translation websites to be found nowadays. They are far from perfect but at least let you grasp the meaning of a sentence. That's how I found out that “zkousky kresby” probably means drawing proof and “cenré tisky” black print. Such information is vital to me, since had just bought two copies of black stamps which were purported to be trial printings and wanted to make sure they really were what I thought. But when those “zkousky kresby” were classified as “uprava”, and the translation site only gave “uprava” as the English translation of the word “uprava”, I knew it was time to give up and find help! 

Thankfully our philatelic brotherhood is usually very accommodating! I managed to come across a Hradcany collector in Sweden (Hej Peter!) with his own Hradcany website, and, after contacting him, he not only helped me with my black print query (it turned out that these were indeed the final proof printings, made in black, to inspect the printing plates and check it for any damage, immediately prior to printing. They're sometimes referred to as chimney stamps!), but also translated the most important words on various proof printings for me. Where would we be without helpful fellow collectors like Peter?

This time I got a mail from a collector in Slovak republic. He asked me to help him to determine a signature and a mark on his postal stationery.
I zde, jako u předcházející položky se na mně obrátil jeden sběratel, tentokrát ze Slovenska, jestli mu dokážu určit podpis a značku na jeho celistvosti.

He wrote: I own this postal stationery with a mark and a signature, which I can't find on your site. I bought this postal stationery at an auction. I would be glad for your answer.
Píše: Vlastním celistvost so značkou ktorú som na Vašej stránke nenašiel viď príloha. Celistvost som dávnejšie vydražil spolu s dalšími na aukcii. Budem vdačný za Vašu odpoveď

It's a very interesting Hradcany postal stationery. According to the notice there, we can establish that it's very likely a stamp-dealer mark and may be his signature. Unfortunately I have never seen this signature and mark before and I can't puzzle out whose mark it is.
The notice on this postal stationery is from March 1934. The letters on the mark can be Jbs. Also the first letter in the signature can be a J and than a surname...
Tato celistvost je velice zajímavá. Dle záznamu na ni, dalo by se říci, že se zde jedná o obchodní značku a o podpis obchodníka. Škoda, ale tuto značku a podpis jsem prozatim nikde neviděl a nedokážu je rozluštit.
Zaznamenání na celistvosti je z března 1934. Iniciály na razítku by mohli být písmenka Jbs. I na tom podpisu by mohlo být to první písmenko J a potom příjmení....

From 1925 to 1935 was in Prague many large and small active post stamp dealers. Here are a few of them: 		 
V letech 1925 - 1935 bylo v Praze spousty větších i menších aktivních obchodníků, zde jen menší soubor:

Černý Antonín, Bergmann Rudolf, Binder Ladislav, Borový František, Brunner Felix, Böhm Rudolf, Bursík Jan, Bursíková Josefina, Ekstein Vilém, Fischlová Vilma, Hála J., Jirásek Josef, Kaplánek Karel, Kessler C. Isidor, Kratochvílová Vlasta, Kvasnička Zděněk (znalec + obchodník), Konopásek Josef, Kosina Jiří, Kozáková A., Lederer Ota, Merta B., Minařík J.J., Nohejlová R., Polák Bedřich, Reichová Greta, Rytířová A., Šašek František + Šašek Ladislav, Seidlerova Margit, Stach Alfons, Stach Leon, Starý Václav, Štědrý František, Svoboda B., Subák Alfred, Vokáč Josef, Wolf Josef...

I believe there were many more of them. Almost every small cigar-store called themselves "philatelist shop". This makes it extra difficult to determine the name of the dealer who correctly wrote on this postal stationery:
Jistě jich bylo ještě mnohem více, skoro "každá" trafika se nazývala "filatelistická prodejna", tak o to těžší je zde najít jméno obchodníka co na tuto celistvost správně zaznamenal:
□ 5a - cut
□ 13N - heavily cut (-20%)
Prague 30. 3. 1934 		□ 5a - zastrižena
□ 13N - silně zastrižená (-20%)
Praha 30. 3. 1934

Some days ago I received a mail from an Italian CSR - collector with a question about the cancellation above.
Please see the scan.
Před pár dny jsem obdržel e-mail od jednoho sběratele ČSR známek z Itálie, s otázkou týkající se razítka na scenu - JSME S VÁMI.

He is interested in, if this cancellation has really been used by regular postage, or if it's an event cancellation or if it's only a "collector cancel".
Sběratel se ptá se, jestli toto razítko bylo opravdu poštovně používané, či jde o příležitostné razítko nebo o filatelistický výrobek?

Unfortunately modern stamps and their cancellations are out of my collecting sphere, neither I could find the answer in my catalogues...
Škoda, moderní známky a navíce razítka jsou mimo mé sběratelské sféry. Pokoušel jsem najít odpověď v mém katalogu, ale marně...

So, if there's someone who knows the answer, me and my Italian friend would be grateful to learn of it!

Today, June 18 2009, I recieved an answer regarding my question about the cancelation above. Thanks to mr Janik, web-master of Japhila and Exponet.
Dnes, 18/6 2009 jsem obdržel odpověď na moji otázku. Pan Břetislav Janík, web-master site Japhila a Exponet píše:

Translation: Some days ago I looked at your site. I saw the article about the cancelation Jsme s Vámi / Buďte s námi. 
Díval jsem se na Tvůj web. Pišeš tam o razitku Jsme s Vámi / Buďte s námi. 

Yes, this cancelation was used in all large towns in the whole of Czechoslovakia. Initiator was Felix Seebauer (if I remember right) from Brno's Merkurfila.
Samozřejmě byly v provozu ve všech krajských městech minimálně celého Československa. Iniciátorem byl Felix Seebauer (pokud vim) z brněnské Merkurfily.

Any way, it's an event cancellation, used by enthusiastic postal clerks during the political emotional times for regular, unphilatelistic postage.
Rozhodně šlo o platné a použivané příležitostné razitko, které bylo otiskováno nadšenými pošťáky v pohnuté době i na běžnou korespondenci - nefilatelistickou.
